The Sequential Oral Sensory (SOS) Approach to Feeding
The SOS Approach was developed by Dr. Kay Toomey (Pediatric Psychologist) who has worked with children with feeding/eating challenges for 35+ years. Established as a family centered, evidence-based program for assessing and treating children with feeding concerns, it is a results-driven feeding program with ~30 years of proven clinical experience helping infants, toddlers, and children learn the skills they need to eat well.
This approach holistically addresses body systems involved in a child’s current eating skills:
physical
medical
nutritional
developmental
learning
environmental
oral motor
postural
sensory factors
“Is this approach for my child?”
Systematic De-Sensitization:
Building food comfortability and confidence through the body’s senses—WITHOUT pressure.
Task-Specific:
Using FOOD as the tool for building oral motor skills when transitioning to solids.
If eating is hard, scary, or hurts, it is NOT just “picky eating”.
